The 1 Nikkor VR 10-100mm f/4-5.6 represents both wide and telephoto in one small zoom package,  Since this lens is a 2.7 crop factor the bottom end will look like a 27mm field of view, plenty wide for most of us, and the long end of 100mm will have a field of view (FOV) of around 270mm.

The first question most people want to know is:  Nikon offers two versions of this lens What is the Difference?  If you been looking around you would have found the 1 Nikkor VR 10-100 f/4.5-5.6 PD-Zoom version.  While the focal range of the two lenses is exactly the same, the design of the lens is very different, both in lens elements and the way you actuate the zoom.

The PD version is geared for the videographers, using an electronic rocker switch to actuate special noiseless motors to electronically control the zoom of the lens in and out. This ensures zooms in your video filming will be "smooth" without the need for a human to turn a zoom ring, which may create a jerky motion.

Secondly, the PD version lens design is different and uses 3 ED elements, and what most people mention is the "weight" of the PD lens is quite a bit, coming in at 18.2 oz (515g) vs 10.5 oz (298g).

From other reports and users' experience, the PD version has a slight edge in overall sharpness, but not by any real big factor.  Finally, the cost of the two can be a couple of hundred dollars.

How does the 1 Nikkor VR 10-100mm f/4-5.6 perform: I find it very good with enough resolution to make your images pop and look pleasing. Photos taken under good lighting conditions, and a pair of steady hands will not disappoint.  For me, I am fine with any lens that gives enough details that you are not disappointed, and this lens does indeed give enough details. However, is not the sharpest Nikkor 1 in the drawer, but gets the job done with very pleasing results.  With Vibration Reduction enabled you can expect to get good handheld photos in lower light as well.

Build Quality: Feels very solid, and well built.  Everything seems tight and absolutely no wobbles anywhere.  The Lens will extend when zoomed and the lens barrel is in two pieces both made of poly carbonate plastic.

Best Uses:  I think it will be well suited for travel and general carry around lens due to its focal length and 10x zoom factor.  If I were buying 3 lenses to cover my needs this would be one of the three, the other two would be the 6.7-13mm and 70-300mm (both of which I own).

I plan on using mine both for travel and doing indoor product shoots, such as some of the photos on this site.

Bottom Line: If you are looking for a good quality lens that covers from wide to telephoto, less than 3 inches, weighs less than a pound you can count on the Nikkor 1 VR 10-100mm f/4-5.6 to help fill in that gap.
