Manufactures all over the world discontinue products over time and the reasons vary such as low sales, bad designs, or in Nikon's case better quality replacement products. Nikon re-invented its camera line with the introduction of the Z camera system, a larger flange, shorter distance to the sensor, and better optics across the board. It would stand to reason financially to cease production on lenses and cameras where sales are down and a replacement is available in the Z line. To this end, we have the continuation of discontinuing production for some DSLR cameras and lenses.  So, if you are a collector of vintage Nikon lenses you may wish to buy any of these items for your collection.
