This is my first introduction into the Fujifilm X line of mirrorless cameras, and from the information, I managed to compile I felt confident in my decision to pick up a Fujifilm X-E3 mirrorless camera with an XF 23mm f/2 R WR Lens and an XF 35mm f/2. Every reviewer had favorable comments about the improvements Fujifilm continues to make in their X line with this updated X-E camera.

Why did I buy a Fujifilm X-E3 when I already have two Nikon DSLRs and numerous lens? The simplest of answers is to cover down on photographic opportunities when I really don't what to carry my larger systems. The Fujifilm X-E3 fits a more relaxing carefree with family and friends and not wanting to be noticed. No shame in being a photographer - but sometimes you just want to blend in a bit more and the Fujifilm X-E3 allows me to do just that. So, that is the reason I got the X-E3 - very small and compact with great optical and image quality.

The second question was why Fujifilm vs Sony vs others mirrorless cameras? This may sound silly, but reading all the post across the board,  I find it heartwarming that Fujifilm has such passionate fan base and followers - and that means something.  It usually boils down to happy customers and Fujifilm is responsive to customer feedback and from what I can tell Fujifilm is doing a great job with their camera line. So, the choice is much easier to make especially when they have a nice selection of cameras and lenses that fit what my needs at an excellent price. I love the fact Fujifilm added basically the same sensor, and focus technology from their top shelf XT-2 in this very small and affordable X-E3.

The third question is how will I incorporate this into my DSLR systems. The Fujifilm X-E3 will be my carry along camera - every day, everywhere - simple. I love going out in the spring with my DSLR and 600mm in hunt of elusive birds, but I also see many pleasing scenes I wished I could capture. The Fujifilm X-E3 will allow me to do just that as well as a few 4K video VLOGs during my adventures.  As mentioned earlier, the Fujifilm X-E3 will allow me to easily carry it alongside my other camera system, or carry the XE-3 all by itself when I just need some personal time to enjoy photography on a lighter scale without worry of loss of quality.

Now, what do I think of this camera? here we go.

No camera is useful without good optics. Fujifilm offers many great lens options for their X series cameras, me personally I am looking for the street type lenses and or portrait lens and Fujifilm offer some excellent lenses optically speaking, available in zooms, and wide to telephoto. My Fujifilm X-E3 will live in a niche area of my photography to fill the gaps when I want to take a few photos but want to travel light, the XE3 does it wonderfully. A low profile solution I can easily carry and manage without being overburdened. I went with an XE3 because I did not want a smaller version of my DSLR, I want to look like a point and shoot tourist.

My Optics:  As mentioned I have the 23mm f/2, and 35mm f/2, I plan on picking up a 16mm f/1.4 and of course probably a 56mm f/1.2 - if I get really ambitious I may pick up the new 80mm Macro lens.

I am highly impressed with what Fujifilm is doing and really enjoy carrying and using this little gem.

What does your hard earned money buy:  A small sleek camera that has a retro look and fun to use including the following attributes:

  1. APS-C X-Trans CMOS III sensor, 24.3MP
  2. 3.0-inch touchscreen, 1,040,000 dots
  3. 4K video capture
  4. ISO 100-51,200 (base starting point is ISO 200)
  5. Smaller but very responsive EVF

Either you like the retro rangefinder look or not, If not Fujifilm has you covered either way with equally capable and even more professional offerings such as the XT-2. You should check out the Fujifilm line because they have a camera for most needs.

What are my initial major positives:

  1. Great Autofocus
  2. Near Perfect in camera Color Reproduction + film simulation modes
  3. Ergonomics, and ease of use - the camera is actually fun to use
  4. joystick focus point
  5. Impressive resolution and sensor
  6. 4K video
  7. Excellent lens availability - optically very good

What are my initial minor complaints:

  1. No flip screen, Fujifilm stated they wanted to keep the profile smaller.
  2. Semi-Touch screen, no menu inputs via touch
  3. No 100% image zoom in playback

Note:  Some people have made comments about the missing D-pad, but after using the camera for a few hours - I really don't miss it.

Please forgive me Fujifilm users, as I am a long term camera user without affiliation to Fujifilm.  I highly recommend this Fujifilm X-E3 camera to anyone needing a small fun to use, light retro looking camera that offer Fujifilms excellent lens options - this is it - period. Fujifilm has done a Fantastic job with the Fujifilm X-E3 mirrorless camera, Image quality is equal to most other APSC sized cameras that I know of +Fujifilm offers some VERY slick image profiles that even work in the 4k video modes as well.  A perfect companion for your DSLR, and now this camera lives next to me every day, like no other camera I have owned - I love it and recommend it for a nice carry along camera that is ready for business.
